Initiatives to expand supply of certified products

As the demand for marine products increases due to “population growth,” “changes in dietary habits due to health consciousness,” and “economic development in emerging countries,” and amid fears of global depletion of marine resources, major mass retailers and food service companies in Japan and abroad are increasingly demanding products that take resource conservation into consideration.
As a seafood wholesaler, Marubeni Seafoods has acquired MSC/ASC*1 CoC certification*2 and MEL*3 CoC certification, which are standards for processors and distributors, and promotes the handling of products produced in the fishing and aquaculture industries that take environmental and marine resource sustainability into consideration.

MSC Certification
A certification system for sustainable fisheries to protect the world's marine resources, administered by the Marine Stewardship Council.

ASC Certification:
An international certification program administered by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council for environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture products.

CoC (Chain of Custody) Certification
Certificate that certified and non-certified marine products are reliably separated and managed during the processing and distribution process.

MEL (Marine Eco-Label Japan) Certification
A Japan-originated fishery eco-label certification system operated by the Marine Ecolabel Japan Council
